Darshan
receiving the lord's merciful glance
OVERVIEW
Darshan means 'seeing' and refers to the auspicious exchange between the devotee and the Deity. When we see the Lord, He also sees us—it is a reciprocal, loving exchange. Taking darshan of the Deity is itself a form of worship.
KEYPOINTS
Darshan is a two-way exchange—we see the Lord and He sees us
The first darshan of the day (mangala-arati) is especially auspicious
Approach darshan with a prayerful, receptive attitude
Seeing the Deity purifies the heart and senses
Different darshans throughout the day show the Lord's daily pastimes
PRACTICAL TIPS
Visit the temple regularly for darshan
Arrive before the curtains open to witness the full revelation
Offer prayers and obeisances when taking darshan
Observe the Deity's dress, ornaments, and mood
Carry the image of the Lord in your heart throughout the day
FROM THE SCRIPTURES
"The Lord is so kind that He personally appears before us in the form of the Deity to accept our service and give us the opportunity to see Him."
